Argonaut Expeditions traces its origins back to 1984 when the father of our current owner arrived in the Galapagos in search of the edge of the world. Here, he found it— One of the few remaining untouched wildernesses on the planet. The last frontier. Settling in this extraordinary place, he became a pioneer in Galapagos tourism, offering scuba diving experiences and excursions around the archipelago. Today, Argonaut carries forward the legacy established forty years ago. Argonaut Expedition’s vision is to take travelers beyond traditional tourism, crafting expert-led journeys that immerse them in the natural world while inspiring a lasting appreciation for conservation.
In ancient Greek legend, the Argonauts were a band of adventurers who sailed aboard the ship Argo, led by Jason in his quest to retrieve the fabled Golden Fleece. Their journey was one of courage, discovery, and perseverance as they braved uncharted waters, faced mythical challenges, and pursued greatness against all odds. Although we won’t be facing any mythical creatures, the Argonauts nevertheless represent exploration, teamwork, and the relentless pursuit of the extraordinary—values that align with the company’s mission and vision.
The company’s name derives from the sea creature the argonaut (Argonauta argo). The Argonaut is a deep water octopus found in Galapagos that creates a delicate shell in which female’s deposit their eggs. The Argonaut is a symbol of self-sufficiency and innovation, hence the reason Argonaut has adopted it as its company symbol.
