How to travel to Galapagos?
To travel to the Galapagos Islands, all travelers must first transit through mainland Ecuador. Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE), the two main cities offering flights to the islands.
From either city, domestic flights operated by Avianca and LATAM connect to one of two airports in the Galápagos:
Seymour Airport (GPS) on Baltra Island
San Cristóbal Airport (SCY) on San Cristóbal Island
Before departure, all passengers must pass an agricultural inspection and purchase a Transit Control Card ($20), which helps regulate tourism. Upon arrival, a Galápagos National Park entrance fee is required for all visitors. Foreigners pay $200. Nationals pay $30.
Once in the Galápagos, transfers vary by location. At Baltra Airport, visitors take a bus to the Itabaca Channel, then a short ferry ride to Santa Cruz Island, followed by ground transport to Puerto Ayora. On San Cristóbal, the airport is near the town, allowing for a quicker entry into the islands.
When to travel to the Galapagos?
Galapagos is a year-round destination. The archipelago lies on the equator, creating a stable climate with two distinct seasons influenced by ocean currents: the wet season (December–May) and the dry season (June–November).
During the wet season the Panama current brings higher temperatures with air temperatures ranging from 77–88°F (25–31°C) and water temperatures between 73–78°F (23–26°C). The seas are calmer and while occasional heavy rains occur, they are typically brief and followed by clear skies.
During the dry season the Humboldt Current brings cooler water from the South with temperatures of 66–79°F (19–26°C) and water temperatures of 66–72°F (19–22°C). There is minimal rainfall and the cool water brings nutrients that marine life feeds on.
Regardless of season, during your visit to Galapagos you are guaranteed to see the island’s emblamatic species.
Galapagos Cruises
Taking a multi-day cruise in the Galapagos Islands offers one of the most immersive and enriching ways to experience this unique archipelago. Cruises allow you to reach remote islands that are inaccessible on day trips, such as Genovesa, Fernandina, and Española, each home to rare wildlife like red-footed boobies, flightless cormorants, and waved albatrosses. Onboard naturalist guides provide insight during the course of the expedition, and the itinerary covers a wide range of landscapes and ecosystems across multiple islands. Cruises range from 4-day options for a short but meaningful glimpse, to 7- or 8-day itineraries for a more comprehensive adventure. With comfortable accommodations and seamless transportation between islands, a cruise offers both convenience and the opportunity to see the Galapagos at its most untouched.

Isabela has the third-largest population in the archipelago, with Puerto Villamil home to around 3,000 people. Isabela is the “wild west” of Galapagos.
